Dealing with doubt in NPD

When we begin an engagement with a start-up or inventor we prepare ourselves for the doubts that are common for new products. We know these are coming so we listen more than we talk and begin to discuss these doubts and start sharing our different points of view. 

Very few new products are “new to the world inventions”.  Even things that are new to the world often solve pretty well-known problems.  In reality most all products are incremental when you step back and consider whats been done before.  Most innovative products stem from a combination of features or technologies aimed at solving these problems. Great value among other things comes from innovation and if you look at the landscape in this way then doubt is diminished.

Is the product truly a new invention or is it excitedly innovative and appetizing for the marketplace!
